I removed one in my floor and now i have a lovely squeak in that spot. After the floor finish is gone you can t see whether the sander is doing its job. Sure it is a big noisy and dusty job but it is doable if you feel up to the task. Prevent sandpaper from tearing.

Move the sander back and forth from front to back on the sander rather than side to side to prevent the edge of the sandpaper from catching and tearing on the grain of the wood.
